At the Genoa Yacht Show in Italy from October 1st to 6th, 2020, Italian start-up company Moi Composites officially launched a 3D printed fiberglass boat MA MBO.
This 3D printed motorboat is 6.5 meters long, 2.5 meters wide, weighs about 800 kilograms, and has a navigation system and a 115cv engine. The 3D printed hull forms an inverted triangle shape based on Sonny Levi's famous Arc id ia volo design. The tip of the ship is deformed, half of it becomes a console, and the other half becomes a ramp to take the user to the deck, where there is a drop-shaped sofa that can be used as a driver’s seat or couch.
It is reported that the ship was built using Moi Composites' new continuous fiber manufacturing technology (CFM). Under the guidance of the generation algorithm, two Kuka Quante c high-precision robots of the project partner Autodesk’s UK factory were used to deposit continuous fibers into the thermosetting resin to produce a material with the strength and durability of traditional glass fibers, but more It is easy to shape and will save time and cost.
Gabriele Natale, CEO and co-founder of Moi Composites, said: "Our 3D printed boat enhances the concept of customization, creating and customizing unique designs from the owner’s mind, giving everyone the opportunity to do it in their own way. Understand and experience the sea."
It is understood that the glass fiber 3D printed boat MAMBO (the acronym for Motor Additive Manufacturing BOat) launched by Moi Composite is with major industrial partners including: Autodesk, Cat marine, Mi cad, Owens Corning, Os cul ati and UC IN A. Co-manufacturing to overcome the custom design and performance limitations of traditional manufacturing and 3D printing in the production of lightweight and durable composite products.
MAMBO uses Moi Composites' patented continuous fiber manufacturing (CFM) technology, which combines the high performance of continuous fiber thermoset composites with the potential and advantages of additive manufacturing processes.
This continuous glass fiber reinforced thermoset composite material makes the product strong, ultra-durable, and lightweight. Each independent printing layer is composed of a sandwich structure (PVC sandwich, polyester resin and glass fiber fabric). After the production process is completed, the exterior surface is aesthetically treated, and then necessary marine equipment and accessories are assembled. MAMBO is not only a ship that uses continuous fiber composite materials to be completely 3D printed, but also a successful case of this type of ship.
The design and printing process lasted for a total of two months. Since the conception, the 3D printed boat has won a special yacht award from the Monaco Yacht Cluster Board of Directors.
