Leif Asp, professor of materials and computational mechanics at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden, studied the functions of carbon fiber as a reinforcing material. He said that in this way, the body is not only a load-bearing component, but also serves as a battery. Carbon fiber can also be used for other purposes, such as collecting kinetic energy for sensors or conductors of energy and data. If all of these functions can be part of the car body or aircraft body, the weight can be reduced by up to 50%.
Researchers observed how different commercial carbon fiber structures can store electrical energy well. Samples containing small crystals have good electrochemical properties—which can work like electrodes in lithium-ion batteries—but tend to be less strong. According to Professor Asp, this slight loss of stiffness is not a major problem, because weaker carbon fibers with good electrical properties are still stronger than steel.
He explained that for the application of carbon fiber in many fields such as automobiles, the slight decrease in stiffness is not a problem. Currently on the market are mainly expensive carbon fiber composite materials whose hardness is tailor-made for aircraft.
